Readers Imbibing Peril XVII – #RIPXVII

Every year, I see the R.I.P. reading event posts a bit too late to participate in them actively. But this year (after almost ten years of blogging), I am on top of things and have decided to participate in this event.

What is RIP XVII?

This is the SEVENTEENTH year of Readers Imbibing Peril, or R.I.P., as it is affectionately called. This challenge runs from 1st September to 31st October. There are Twitter and Instagram accounts where you can find out more about the various ‘perils’ on offer, and while participating, you can use the hashtag #RIPXVII.

The R.I.P. Reading event includes books/movies/shows/podcasts that could be classified as:

  • Mystery
  • Suspense
  • Thriller
  • Dark Fantasy
  • Gothic
  • Horror
  • Supernatural

The goals are simple.

1. Have fun reading.
2. Share that fun with others.

Multiple levels of participation (Perils) allow you to be a part of R.I.P. XII without adding the burden of another commitment. You can participate in just one or participate in them all. Here are the categories I am planning to join and my plan for each of these categories.

The peril of the Fiction Read

Read one (or more!) fiction books that fit the definition of R.I.P. literature.

Books I selected for the RIP challenge
Books I selected for the RIP challenge
  • Mexican Gothic – Silvia Moreno-Garcia
  • The Family Upstairs – Lisa Jewell
  • Dark Matter – Blake Crouch
  • Ninth House – Leigh Bardugo

The peril of the Screen

Watch something RIP’y.

  • Only Murders in the Building – Show starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez
  • The Amityville Horror – Movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George
  • Eerie – A Philipino movie on Netflix that my friends have been raving about

The peril of the Real

Watch a true crime movie/documentary.

For this category, I am thinking about A Death in Texas: Candy – a true story of a woman who murdered her married lover’s wife.

I”ll be honest. I am a big wuss when watching horror/terror/murders. The moment things get scary, I stop. My Netflix is full of half-watched mysteries and thrillers. But at the same time, I am always intrigued by the stories.

Let’s see which side of me wins out during this challenge!

Are you participating in the challenge this year? What perilous things are you planning to imbibe this fall?

  1. Hmm, I have somehow never heard of this event, but it’s pretty much a given that I’ll read and/or watch SOMETHING that qualifies during the time period. Actually I’m currently reading the Icelandic ghost story “I Remember You” so I’m probably participating right this very moment … 😁

I have also been participating in it unofficially all these years. This is the first time, I am officially committing to it.

Yes, it seems like classic old-school scary, and I am really looking forward to it.
