Readers Imbibing Peril XVII – #RIPXVII: Updates

It’s been a couple of months since I posted about my participation in the Readers Imbibing Peril XVII – #RIPXVII challenge. Looking through my blog today, I realized I hadn’t updated much about it, even though I did a fair amount of reading and watching for this challenge.

What is RIP XVII?

This is the SEVENTEENTH year of Readers Imbibing Peril, or R.I.P., as it is affectionately called. This challenge runs from 1st September to 31st October.

The R.I.P. Reading event includes books/movies/shows/podcasts that could be classified as:

  • Mystery
  • Suspense
  • Thriller
  • Dark Fantasy
  • Gothic
  • Horror
  • Supernatural

I participated in three categories – Fiction, screen, and true crime (real).

The peril of the Fiction Read

Books I selected for the RIP challenge
Books I selected for the R.I.P. challenge

I had these books planned for my fiction read, and I am thrilled to say that I finished all of them. Reviews are still pending. Only Ninth House is up.

But all the books were enjoyable. Fantastic reads!

The peril of the Screen

I had planned to watch these shows/movies.

  • Only Murders in the Building – Show starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez
  • The Amityville Horror – Movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George
  • Eerie – A Philipino movie on Netflix that my friends have been raving about

However, I only managed to finish both seasons of Only Murders in the Building, which was excellent. Dark yet funny, glamorous, and very New York. Loved it!

The peril of the Real

For this category, I watched A Death in Texas: Candy – a true crime story of a woman who murdered her married lover’s wife.

I was initially very hesitant, but I ended up enjoying the series. It’s just five episodes, but it was pretty tense, and I took breaks in between to avoid getting overwhelmed by it. Well acted and well directed, it got me thinking about how sometimes there’s no justice in this world.

And that was it for my participation! I didn’t do too bad, considering how abysmally I usually perform in these types of things.

Thoughts

I got so into all the books I read for this challenge that I have rediscovered my love for all things thrilling. The next set of books I have on my bedside reading table is also dark.

After reading the excellent Mexican Gothic, I immediately stepped into Ruth Ware. I plan to follow it up with more Silvia Moreno-Garcia and a hopefully fast-paced Mary Kubica book.

Did you participate in the challenge this year? What perilous things did you imbibe this fall?
