This week’s theme is all about the books on our Autumn/Fall TBR!
This summer has been crazy busy, I think I keep saying that each quarter, but honestly, something or the other keeps coming up. This time, it was our moving house. We finally closed on a house after almost a year of house hunting and moved in. This one is a bit of a fixer-upper; it’s a charming 50s house, but we need to redo the kitchen (which is still stuck in the 50s) and replace the flooring throughout the entire ground floor. Very little time for reading, as you can imagine.
With that, I still managed to finish five books of my summer reading list before our house move began, so not too bad at all.
Here are the books on my Autumn reading list.
- The Autograph Man by Zadie Smith – I already started this last night, and so far, not too keen on it. It’s got Zadie Smith’s signature wit and writing style, but I am not yet hooked by the story about a man who buys and sells autographs. Still, I do see myself continuing with the hope that it gets better.
- Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O’Farrell – It’s been a super hot summer, and even September seems to be hitting the 20s, which is hard to grapple with. In this time, I think it’s comforting to look back on another similar heatwave in the UK in 1976, when this book is set.
- A Quiet Place by Seichō Matsumoto – I haven’t had much luck with crime fiction lately, turning my attention to Japanese crime fiction in the hope that it will be more interesting. This author is considered a Japanese Agatha Christie, so my expectations are high.
- The Secret Society of Librarians by Kate Thompson – This was an impulse pick from the library. It’s about two book-loving women during World War 2 and is supposedly based on a true story. Sounds intriguing!
- Scenes From a Tragedy by Carole Hailey – The bright yellow cover caught my attention. It seems to be about a psychopath and how they manipulate people around them. I dipped into it last night, and I was soon speed-reading late into the night. Pretty sure this is going to be a favorite!
- The Last Mughal: The Fall of a Dynasty: Delhi, 1857 by William Dalrymple – I am a huge fan of his Empire history podcast, but I have never actually read any of his books. Time to remedy that, I think.
- Possession by A.S. Byatt – I have been in possession of this book for ages. Some of the scathing reviews on goodreads have made me put it on the back burner, and I am considering it for fall reading. Although, if I am honest, it will probably continue to linger unread on my bookshelf.
- Lady Tan’s Circle of Women by Lisa See – I enjoy her books, even if they all seem to run into a formula.
- London by Edward Rutherford – I am trying to learn more about our local history, and this seems like a decent place to start.
- Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke – Of course, I have to add a book of the moment to round out my list. Everything I’ve read on the web seems to indicate I may not like this too much, but I want to read it anyway to understand the hype around it.

Ooh! I didn’t know that. I might skip the book for the show, even. The story sounds very series-friendly.
