What to binge-watch this month

It’s been a long time since I shared some streaming recommendations of my favorite shows/movies. I’ve been reading more these past couple of months, but there is also some good content on OTT that I have been enjoying and thought I’d share here.

The Lost Daughter

Starring Olivia Colman, this movie is a creepy, unsettling story about a middle-aged English woman who develops an unhealthy fixation with a young mother and child, and especially on the child’s doll.

Weird and strange. It’s a movie I still don’t quite get, but it’s worth watching for Colman’s exemplary acting, the Greek island setting (always love movies in beautiful locations), the general vibe, and for the always-wonderful Ed Harris.

Anatomy of a Scandal

Short mini-series (just six episodes), with a promise of a second season. I overall liked this courtroom thriller about a sleazy politician being prosecuted for rape. It starts off strong but loses its way somewhat towards the end, with a rather unnecessary twist.

Still, worth the watch. I am not very familiar with the British judiciary system, so it was interesting to see the courtroom scenes and to see that even the barristers had to wear wigs.

Also loved Rupert Friend’s fabulous take on the sleazy politician.

House of Gucci

What do I say about House of Gucci? It’s a ridiculous movie. It’s got a whole array of actors overacting to the hilt. There’s a fake Italian accent that turns on and off whenever the stars feel like it. Crazy, over-the-top settings and costumes. I should have hated this movie, but I loved it.

I do have to say that the editing seems a bit ruthless. Ideally, this movie should have been a mini-series. Trying to squeeze such a vast in scope story into two and a half hours doesn’t do justice to the actors or the story. Loved it anyway!

Don’t Look Up

Another star-studded movie. This one is about a meteor that is coming to hit Earth and the chaos that ensues when Leonardo DiCaprio and his fellow astronomers try to warn people about the upcoming disaster.

Dark humor. Check. Fantastic acting. Check. Sucker punch of an ending. Check.

If you’ven’t already watched it, watch it now.

Drag me to Hell

I normally don’t watch horror movies, but I can make an exception for Sam Raimi. I pretty much love every movie he has directed.

In spite of that, this movie was stuck in my watchlist for ages until I got a notification from Prime that it was going to be removed soon. Immediately, I sat up one cold, stormy late night to watch it, and then proceeded to tremble every time the thunder rumbled.

It stars Alison Lohman as an innocent loan officer who rubs one of her clients the wrong way. This then ends up being a never-ending nightmare for the poor girl who spends most of the movie screaming. Boy, does she scream well!

If you like classic horror, you will love this one. It’s macabre, over-the-top, funny, silly, loud, and bombastic.

Too bad, it’s no longer on Prime, you”ll have to check it out on other streaming options.

Koffee with Karan

I know, I know. It’s a stupid talk show. It focuses too much on sex and nepotism. But it’s my guilty pleasure. I love watching all the silly double meaning banter. I love the gowns and glamor of the actresses.

This season, I have particularly enjoyed Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Vijay Deverakonda bringing a touch of South Indian dignity to the series to offset Bollywood’s fluff.

It’s the show no one wants to admit they watch, but everyone watches anyway!

So these are all my recommendations, folks. A bit all over the place – from super serious and dark to light-hearted to flat-out terrifying. Have you seen any of these? Planning to watch any? Let me know in the comments.

I have seen Don’t Look Up and even though it’s not what I normally watch I loved it! Right now I’m going back and watching Parenthood and just watched the first two episodes of the new Rings of Power show on Amazon.

How’s the Rings of Power? I have currently unsubscribed from Prime, and am now wondering if it’s worth it just to watch this show.

  7. I’ve been watching a lot of TV lately, but none of these, so thanks for all the recs! I enjoyed The Bear on Hulu and Players on Paramount+ (so silly), but the thing that’s truly been giving me joy is a show called The Dog House on HBO Max, which is just about people wanting dogs who go to a dog rescue and get matched with rescue dogs. It’s the sweetest.

The Dog House sounds delightful. Need to check if it’s available on here. Only some HBO Max shows make it here, not all.
