Moving into your new home is both an exciting and stressful experience. You need to make sure you get a mortgage, organize and pack up your belongings, clean the home you’re moving out of, and remember to book a moving company to help you on the day. Then there is thinking about what kind of wallpaper you like, any new furniture you want to buy, and other home décor options you need to consider. With so much going on, it can be easy to forget about some other essentials you might need when you do settle into your new home. Here are five items that are particularly important.
Insurance
Before you move into your new home, make sure you have home insurance. Ideally, get this cover to start as soon as the house legally becomes yours (this might be before your official move-in date). House insurance will help to keep you financially protected in the case of thieves breaking into your home and stealing your belongings, or if there is any accidental damage caused by an incident that wasn’t your fault, such as a fire breaking out. Extension Cords
Insurance will help give you some peace of mind that your new home is protected, but there are other items that you may be surprised you will need when you move in—extension cords being one example. A property should come with a reasonable number of outlets for you to plug your appliances into, but often there are never quite enough. This is why having some extension cords at hand will be incredibly useful, and will help you to avoid overloading one outlet and risking blowing a fuse, or worse, starting an electrical fire.
Cleaning Products
When moving house there are some items that you might think are OK to leave behind, such as cleaning products. While there is nothing wrong with doing this, you might want to think twice before you decide that they’re not worth taking with you. Although it is common courtesy to leave the property in a clean and tidy condition when moving out, some people might not be as thoughtful as you’d like. Another tool you will no doubt have use for when moving into your new house is a tape measure. If you are planning to put up shelves, buy a new couch or bedframe—or any item of furniture—you must make sure it will fit in the spot where you want to put it. This is where your tape measure will come in handy, as well as a few other basic tools including a spirit level, hammer, nails, and a screwdriver.
Light Bulbs
No one wants to get caught short when the lights go out, particularly if you have boxes stacked up waiting to be unpacked. Having some spare light bulbs with you when you move into the new house (just in case any need replacing) could be a good idea. You may want to get a selection of bulbs, however, as there are different designs for specific lighting fixtures.
These items might not be on the top of your list when you’re planning to move into a new house, but make sure that you do remember, because you will most likely need them.
