Ways to make moving day stress-free

Moving into a new home can be exciting, stressful, and overwhelming, but with a few tips, you can take control and feel at home in no time at all. You can stop moving day stress in its tracks with four tips to help your day run smoothly and settle into your new home quickly.

Create a moving to-do list

It’s all in the planning! Before moving day is even upon you, take the time to sit and write a list of what you need to do, prior to the move and once you’re in your new place. Most people forget they’ll have no food, so order a food shop to be delivered. Start contacting electricity, tv, internet and water providers in advance to let them know you’re going to be moving. Try and keep your to-do list with you at all times, you can add to it if something pops into your head. Don’t forget to get a sitter for kids and pets, and have an emergency stash of essentials with you on the day, such as toilet roll and a kettle for drinks.

Start packing early & label everything

Don’t wait until the last minute to start packing. Take a look at Mi-Box to find portable storage in Calgary, so you can get packing sorted weeks before you move. They come in a variety of sizes and are designed to fit on your driveway. They’ll drop the storage container at your home before your move, meaning you can add boxes to the container whenever you want. On your moving day, they’ll take the full storage container of your belongings to your new address. It’s a great way to move hassle-free and at your own pace. Also, don’t forget to label every box, so they can be easily distributed to each room when you get to your new home.

Ask for help

Round up friends and family to help on the day if you can. It’s amazing how much quicker you’ll get everything sorted with a few extra pairs of hands. They’re going to be lifting heavy boxes, so offer to repay them with food to keep them happy. If your priority is to get the living room and bedrooms sorted, focus on those rooms first. Leave the other rooms for another day or delegate them to your helpers. Helping someone move house is a big ask, so be super clear about what you’re asking from them, and offer to return the favor in the future.

Take regular breaks

Have realistic expectations of how much you can get done in one day. You’re not going to be in and settled with everything in its place, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself. If you’re starting to feel stressed, take some time out to catch up on your favorite show, go for a walk, or grab some lunch. Don’t forget to stay calm, and be flexible with whatever happens on the day.
