This is a lovely story of sixteen-year-old conjoined (Siamese) twins, Grace and Tippi.

They have been home-schooled in the past, and at 16, for the first time, they will be attending their local school.

Life is tough when suddenly faced with a school full of curious students and constant stares and whispers.

But soon they make new friends Yasmeen and Jon and a small romance seems about to start blooming.

Until a health emergency arises and the two girls have to make the most important decision of their lives.

My Review

This is my first time reading an entire book written in verse, and I was a bit apprehensive about it. I wasn’t sure that the writing style would do justice to the story. And I was a bit doubtful about the audience of this book.

Was this a YA book that kids could read? Yes, it is, the language and the story is pretty simple. But would kids actually want to read a book of verse?

I needn’t have thought it through so much. Snubnose picked up the book and was very soon engrossed in it. I guess kids don’t really mind if a book is in verse as long as the language is easy and the story appeals.

That said, the story is sad, and somewhere in the middle of the book, Snubnose decided it was too much for her.

I continued on anyway and found myself laughing and crying along with the characters.

And what characters they are. Grace and Tippi are written so well – completely distinctive characters even if they happen to share a body. Their younger sister – so totally adorable.

I even loved their parents and their grandma, and basically everyone in the book, they are all so human, with so many flaws, but they come across so vulnerable that I just couldn’t stop my heart melting (and later breaking) for all of them.

The story is pretty simple and straight-forward, and I pretty much guessed what would happen at the start of the book itself. However, the beautiful writing more than made up for the predictability of the story.

This is a book with heart (lots of it), and I recommend it highly.

Huge thanks to Bloomsbury Publishing for sending me this book for review consideration.
