Books and coffee are two of my favorite things. So, when I saw this challenge on Reviews from the Stacks, I just had to participate.
This tag originated in the bookstagram community; however, I haven’t seen it there, so I am participating in my blog instead.
Espresso – A book that was hard to get through
I think my current read is pretty heavy going. I am in the middle of Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr, and although it’s easy to read, I don’t find the story compelling enough. It’s been three weeks, and I am still not halfway through the novel. The different storylines are frankly driving me a bit cuckoo.
Cappuccino – one that everyone has read, but me
Many books could fall into this bucket as I don’t always read from the bestseller list. Looking through the books on my shelf, I guess The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid would fit into this category. So would The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell. Both books have been on my shelf for ages, and I mean to get to them soon.
Latte – a sweet read
A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth was a long but sweet read. Not too treacly, deep enough to grab my attention, but still a very wholesome book. The show is good, too, if you don’t feel like reading 1000 pages of this chunkster.
Mocha – an emotional read
Hamnet by Maggie O’ Farrell, about the death of Shakespeare’s son, was the most emotional book I read this year. But I am still haunted by Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart (a 2021 read) about a child dealing with his alcoholic mother.
Macchiato – favorite read of the year
Ugh! I read so many great books this year; it’s difficult to choose. But if I had to pick just one, I would go with A House for Mr.Biswas by V.S.Naipaul. A close contender would be Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James – two very different types of books but (purely a coincidence) written by authors from the Caribbean.
