Top ten tuesday

This week’s theme is all about my top ten comfort reads.

This list is not about comfort reads; it’s more like – books or kinds of books you turn to when you need to escape. These can be either specific titles or qualities of books I look for in a comfort read.

My top ten comfort reads
  1. The Harry Potter series by J.K.Rowling – This is probably my favorite book series. I know all the dialogues and every plot twist, yet these books are one of my all-time favorites.
  2. Winnie the Pooh series by A.A.Milne – Reading Winnie the Pooh takes me back to my childhood days, and it feels like a warm hug from an old friend.
  3. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – Jane Austen’s books are always great for a reread. I have listed Pride and Prejudice in this list, but all her books are wonderfully comforting.
  4. Bridget Jones’ Diary by Helen Fielding – This series is just note-perfect, except for maybe the last book where Darcy is dead, or the one where she had a baby and didn’t know who the father was. Ughh! Just the first two books, then.
  5. Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella – This series also has the same warm feeling as Bridget Jones. This also goes on for one too many books, but I am always up for rereading the first two or three books.
  6. The Walsh family series by Marian Keyes – This is a series of books about the romantic travails of a bunch of sisters from the Walsh family. Each book is unique; there is a bit of bitterness mixed with the sweetness, yet they are all lovable books. Recommend them highly to romance lovers.
  7. Cotillion by Georgette Heyer – Again, all her books are very comforting, but for this list, I choose Cotillion, which is delightfully light-hearted and completely overturns romance novel tropes.
  8. Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery – I confess I haven’t read all the books in this series. It got a bit too syrupy-sweet around the fourth book, and Anne wasn’t as much fun after she grew up (but who is, right?). I still reread the first three books now and then when I feel bored. I tried introducing this book series to my daughter, but she gave up pretty soon. I guess the next-gen kids don’t relate to this slow life as much as I do.
  9. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie – Usually, murder mysteries are not comforting. But somehow, Christie is. Even though I know the culprit (I have read all books now), I still love to reread these books and see the more minor connections. Read her books in the order they were published, and you can really see the growth in her writing (and yes, also the similarities in her plots). But the similarities are what make these books a comfortable read for me.
  10. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens – Saving the best for last. I know Dickens can be wordy, but I love him, and I think A Christmas Carol is a fine example of a comfort read.

What do you think of my list? What books are your comfort reads?

P&P, HP series and Agatha Christie books are my comfort reads as well. I keep going back to them when I am in a slump or want just want some nice read that I am sure will make me happy. I need to read Anne of Green Gables.

  2. I smiled to see Agatha Christie making an appearance on your list because I’ve found reading her books is a comfort read too, which I never thought I’d say about murder mysteries.

  3. Pride and Prejudice made it on my list today too. I don’t re-read often but that’s one of the books that I come back to time after time!

Same here. I am not big on rereading, but I love to read P&P any time, honestly all the books on this list make great rereads.

Isn’t it? I had to deliberately stop myself from putting in more children’s books. This could easily have been a top ten fave children’s books list.
