I mentioned in my review that I didn’t like the plot of the book much, but the writing and setting more than made up for the silly plot.
Here are a couple of examples to illustrate what I mean about the writing:
This is why dreams can be such dangerous things: they smolder on like a fire does, and sometimes they consume us completely.
Grief is a most peculiar thing; we’re so helpless in the face of it. It’s like a window that will simply open of its own accord. The room grows cold, and we can do nothing but shiver. But it opens a little less each time, and a little less; and one day we wonder what has become of it.
~ Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
- BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
- Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Wow, I completely understand what you mean. The language of the writing is beautiful, descriptive and almost tangible in a way. Lovely teasers!
Here are My Teasers.
@kerry_o_donnell:disqus yeah, the writing is good. In places though, I felt he overdid the comparisons, but still overall very beautiful.
Wonderful quotes. I’m reading a horror story right now called Santa’s Little Helper. You wouldn’t expect such deep writing in the genre. But H.D. Gordon knows how to use her words and you could open this book anywhere and find a wonderful passage.
Here is my TT from The Memory Closet. Another very quotable read.

@laurathomas61:disqus a well-written horror story is a rarity indeed. I love horror and must check out this book. Thanks for the recco.
Sometimes beautiful words make up for a shaky plot. I’m glad you enjoyed this book in spite of its shortcomings.
My Tuesday post features WAR BRIDES.
I tried this years ago and skimmed a lot of it. Just not my cuppa. My TT is for The Fault in Our Stars
You are right Nish, the writing is really captivating something both teasers capture. Here is my TT for this week http://cleopatralovesbooks.wordpress.com/2014/10/14/teaser-tuesday-october-14/
