Over the weekend I went to a fabulous garden party, I knew a lot of fashionable (by that, I mean high-fashion) people were invited, and I went along with a pleasurable anticipation of some fun people watching.
To my bemusement what I saw was almost every other woman was carrying some version of this bag – the Selma bag by Michael Kors.
I kid you not, practically all the colors of the rainbow were on display in the exact same style.
How does this happen? Is there some collective fashion intelligence that everyone has and that I don’t? Because I was probably the only one in my friend circle not carrying it. The only other girl in my group carrying something else whatsapped me today to tell me she is picking up one from Amazon for the mind-boggling price of Rs. 38, 349/- (USD 630 as per today’s conversion rate).
I got to say I do like the style of the bag but for that price, and with everyone carrying it around, I am giving this trend a big pass and will save the money instead for future travel.
Instead I will continue to carry my beloved one and only clutch that I got for less than a quarter of the price of the Selma and flaunt its uniqueness 🙂 .
But seriously, how does something become so ubiquitous all of a sudden? Is everyone reading the same fashion magazines, following the same style blogs? How?
Do you see this bag often where you live? Is this bag so hot worldwide? Frankly, I don’t see the appeal.
I hope none of them are reading your blog right noew 🙂 🙂 I will NEVER have the heart to spend that kind of money on a bag; ohh and if i were swimming inthat kind of money.. i would spend it on books … books and books.I cringe if I have to pay more than 1500…that is the upper limit for everything for me lol!
@veens:disqus I don’t think this post would offend any of my friends. It all depends on priorities. I don’t have the money so I wouldn’t. If I had that much free cash, who knows what I would do. I might blow it up on travel, but there would be someone who would look at me disapproving that I am spending money instead of saving up for my kids education or retirement or something like that 😀
You said that right. Oh … my mom … she will have a heartache if she knew the amount i spend on books… she would kill me and feed me to the dragons :/ for not saving every penny for the dreaded old age!
It’s a nice bag, but nothing special (IMO). Strange how the hive mind produces these crazy popular things sometimes. Is it quite large? I can’t really tell from the picture — I can only use enormous handbags, because I insist on carrying around notebooks and hardback books. It is not great for my shoulders and not great for the longevity of the handbags. :p
@readingtheend:disqus It’s a big bag, but in my mind, if it were not for the logo, it would be a great work bag – can take a lot of stuff, books, even a small laptop. It looks pretty rugged too. It’s weird as a party bag but of course, I could stuff it full of diapers and snacks :D. It does look like it can take a beating.
your clutch is pretty 🙂 I prefer buying many pretty and cheaper bags than buying one expensive one. And I too would prefer to use the 38k+ on a holiday 🙂
@dreamzandclouds: if I had the money to burn, many and expensive bags is the way I’d go, but since I don’t…also I keep thinking what I could do with 38k – a return flight to anywhere in Asia sounds so much more appealing than a bag right now 🙂
OMG.. I could buy a new phone for that much money. Seriously.. I will never have the heart to buy a bag for 38k. :O I love your clutch, btw. 🙂
Thanks @disqus_POBj1jk1qj:disqus I bought it from an ebay auction, with my heart in my mouth. Thankfully, it came promptly and was as described.
I know what you mean. I have sometimes seen the same bag or dress or shoes everywhere. It’s like everyone’s tuned to some channel that broadcasts the bag/dress/shoe of the day or something similar.
@athirac:disqus I swear it’s crazy how people suddenly seem to know. I feel so out of place when that happens, I am usually the last to get it 😀
Yes! These bags are everywhere! too bad I I can’t even afford the clasp on a MK bag. But I recently snagged a great lookalike from NY&Co for only $50. It’s stylish enough to be cute without looking like a cheap knockoff. Last week, at a baby shower, someone complimented me on my bag, and when I told them it was from NY&Co they said “oh, thought it was a Michael Kors”. Mission accomplished!
@Highchairs & Headaches: neither can I. I can’t say I would spend that much on a bag even if I did have the cash. Would much prefer to save it for a fun holiday 🙂
