Teaser Tuesdays: Bluebeard’s Egg

This week’s teaser is from Bluebeard’s Egg – a collection of short stories by Margaret Atwood.

This teaser is the first paragraph taken from a story called Two Stories About Emma. Seems quite a promising start, doesn’t it?

There are some women who seem to be born without fear, just as there are people who are born without the ability to feel pain.

The painless ones go around putting their hands on hot stoves, freezing their feet to the point of gangrene, scalding the linings of their throats with boiling coffee, because there is no warning anguish. Evolution does not favor them.

So too perhaps with the fearless women, because there aren’t very many of them around. I myself have known only two.

  1. Atwood is mostly hit or miss for me, I didn’t like The Handmaid’s Tale, but loved Oryx and Crake for instance. This sounds interesting just from the title, I might check it out!

@priyatabularasa:disqus I agree with you that Atwood is hit or miss. I disliked The Blind Assassin intensely, and it took me years to pick up another of her books. But how did you come to dislike The Handmaid’s Tale? It’s a universal favorite almost.

Sounds intriguing! An author I’ve been meaning to try for ages, but have still never got around to. Will you be doing a review of the book?

    1. says: Nishita

@fictionfan:disqus definitely. I finished the book over the weekend and am already working on a review.

This sounds like a great short story collection. I wonder what happened the woman who didn’t fear anything, what danger did she put herself in? Great Teaser!

@disqus_mUBrEiIQ5D:disqus she almost drowns in the Niagara falls while doing some rafting, later on dives into the NIle river braving crocodiles, and then almost drowns again in the sea somewhere. She was definitely fearless!

The story doesn’t tell much about what eventually happens to her, but I think she led a long and fun life 🙂

@disqus_fT2TINuo2O:disqus I finished it last night and it’s good. I liked and identified with most of the stories very much.
