I am randomly browsing books when I come across Beloved, the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Toni Morrison. I don’t remember whether I have read the book or not, so I just skim through and come across the below passage.
There is a loneliness that can be rocked. Arms crossed, knees drawn up, holding, holding on, this motion, unlike a ship’s, smooths and contains the rocker. It’s an inside kind–wrapped tight like skin.
Then there is the loneliness that roams. No rocking can hold it down. It is alive. On its own. A dry and spreading thing that makes the sound of one’s own feet going seem to come from a far-off place.”

Sold. The book immediately goes into my bag.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
- BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
- Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Toni Morrison’s such a gifted writed; great tease

I’ve just finished “Whispers Underground” by Ben Aaronovitch and saw your post. It’s the third in his series which starts with “Rivers of London” – I recommended it to three people so far and they all love it as much as me! It is a cracking read, not too taxing and very very funny.
My two sentences are:
“‘Old-fashioned,’ said the neighbour, who was white, thin and nervous in an expensive kind of way. “Rather like a music hall in fact.”
I hope you like it too!
I read this book recently and I found it hard going. It’s beautiful but difficult. I hope you’ll enjoy it loads! My review is here: http://leeswammes.wordpress.com/2012/07/18/book-review-beloved-by-toni-morrison/
