The books are a tumbling off the shelves
The books are a tumbling off the shelves

It’s been a long time since I did a Mailbox Monday post. I get my book deliveries both at home and office, and collating everything in one place and taking a photo seems to be an impossible task (and I know I have no logical reason for it). However, in the last couple weeks or so, books have been really tumbling into the house, and the only way I can keep track of what’s come in, and what I plan to read and review is through this Mailbox Monday post.

So, without further ado, here are the books I received starting from left to right.

I am currently reading The Mask Diaries by Abhinav Goel. I haven’t gone very far into the book, but it seems to be about a difficult relationship between father and son. Adding a layer of complexity to the book, the son can read minds. Interesting!

Summit by Harry Farthing came to me from Westland Publishing. It’s a book based in the Himalayas, and just on that basis alone, I happily accepted it. I loved the last mountaineering book I read (Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer). Summit is a very different sort of book though combining mountain climbing and the Third Reich in one exciting sounding thriller.

Dangerous Games by Danielle Steel came to me from Pan MacMillan India. I started and finished this book over the weekend, and liked it. Here, Steel veers away from her usual formula and ventures into new territory, and I recommend it for anyone looking for a quick read. Complete review coming up soon.

The Escape Artist by Diane Chamberlain also came to me from Pan MacMillan India. I haven’t read any of the authors’ books before, but the premise (that of a divorced mother hiding from her husband and then forced to come out of hiding) an interesting one. I am sure I”ll enjoy it.

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard is the last book that came to me from Pan MacMillan India. It’s the first in a new Fantasy series. I am always happy to give new Fantasy books a try as it’s my favorite genre, so I happily said yes to this one too.

The next three books came to me from Penguin Random House.

The Poison of Love by K.R.Meera has been doing the rounds and receiving good reviews from a number of Indian book bloggers, and I am curious to know what it’s about. On the surface, it seems to be a simple story about rejected love, but the rave reviews have me thinking there must be a lot more to the story than just that.

Bijnis Woman is by Tanuja Chandra (yes, the Tanuja Chandra who is a popular Indian director). I love her woman-oriented movies, and I am interested in this book of three short stories of women in Uttar Pradesh.

Our Story Ends Here by Sara Naveed is about the love story between a terrorist and an army general’s daughter. Again, this seems to be quite a basic story, and at first I wasn’t too interested in it. But then I read Vishy’s review. He always writes very thoughtful, unbiased reviews, and so I am pretty much sold on it now.

Battlefields and Paradise by Sabir Hussain came to me from Harper Collins. It’s a travelogue of a journalist’s travels on a motorcycle from Delhi all the way to Ladakh. I love to live vicariously through travel stories, and so I am looking forward to getting to this one sometime soon.

All the rest of the books in the photo above are my daughter’s books. She turned 11 recently, and received a ton of presents from her friends, quite a few of them happening to be books. I am looking forward quite a bit to reliving some of my childhood with the Enid Blyton books. I also plan to steal her copy of Quidditch Through the Ages, and read it on the sly.

One book not included here is The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. She got it for her birthday from her best friend and has been glued to it since then.

So these are all the books that came to me last couple of weeks. I am a bit overwhelmed honestly as quite a few of them came to me without my asking for them. I foresee a full summer of reading up ahead.

What books did you get last week? What are you looking forward to reading?

Nice week. You’ve got lots of titles I haven’t seen before. I use Mailbox Monday to track my books too, along with Goodreads.

@disqus_i6yD8dkxUt:disqus I should use Goodreads for tracking. Somehow, it just seems like another place to put my reviews once I am done with a book.

Quite a number of new names for me in this picture. I’m curious how your daughter will get on with The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas since I was talking to a mum last week who said her 11 year old didn’t understand it at all

@disqus_gmoXW9BOB2:disqus They are studying the world wars in school, and she ‘s already read Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. The boy… was actually in her recommended reading list. She normally ignores these lists, but I think she was sufficiently shocked and moved by all that she learnt about the world war that she’s really into this one.
