Welcome to this week’s Mailbox Monday which is hosted this month by The Reading Fever.

Random House publications sent me a varied selection of books this week.

I am really looking forward to The Goddess Chronicle by Natsuo Kirino, which I am planning to read as part of the Japanese Literature Reading Challenge overseen by Dolce Bellezza. It seems like an interesting female-oriented book and is also a contemporary retelling of an ancient Japanese myth. Read Cayce’s excellent review for more thoughts on this book.

Next up is Through the Window by Julian Barnes. It’s billed as a series of essays and one short story, and because it is Julian Barnes whose writing style I love, I am willing to give his essays a try.

Last but not the least is my regular thriller fix. This time, it’s by James Patterson whose books are pretty up and down for me. I’ve heard goodreads reviews that Private Berlin is not in the usual Patterson style, and I am hoping that this means a satisfying read for me.

What books did you receive last week? What books are you looking forward to reading?

The Goddess Chronicle looks really interesting. I feel like I don’t read enough books set in Japan, and really think I should make it more of a priority.

@Shoshanah: You could try this book. It is pretty readable. Some Japanese books can be a bit too out there, but although this one deals with mythology, the writing is very simple and easy to follow 🙂 plus it deals with some feminist ideas, so if you are into that, it’s a great read.

@Kathy: Yes, I hope so too. Btw, do you know what’s up with the Mailbox Monday link-up post on The Reading Fever? It looks like this week there’s not going to be one

  2. Ooh, I’ve loved Natsuo Kirino’s other books! Glad to see you taking part in the challenge – it’s always fun. Have a lovely week!

@samstillreading: I’ve heard great things about her crime fiction. I started this book during the weekend, and so far it’s excellent 🙂

  3. I am reading Patterson’s Alex Cross, Run. And I have a big pile on by to-be-reviewed list. Highway 39 is the other book I am reading alongside. I am curious about Julian Barnes’ book here since I totally loved his The Sense of an Ending.
