I realize that I participate a lot in Top ten posts, especially book lists of my TBR books, but I rarely go back and check to see if I read the books I promised myself to read. When I saw Jessticulates doing a lookback post to see her reading status, I thought I should do one too and see where I stand versus my reading goals.

My TBR list for summer 2021 looked like this.

My summer TBR list
My summer TBR list

I chose books that were very interesting to me and not too challenging – a good mix of easy and difficult reads, or so I thought.

Unfortunately, my reading took a very different path. I shifted The Mirror and the Light by Hilary Mantel to my Fall TBR because my headspace wanted something lighter. I didn’t get to Embroideries, but I did pick up and enjoy Marjane Satrapi’s first book – Persepolis (review coming soon).

I read and reviewed Agatha Raisin and the Haunted House by M.C.Beaton (not bad, but I am not sure this series is for me). Another book I finished is The Twentieth Wife by Indu Sundaresan (yet to review it, but this was a good, solid book).

The rest of the books on my list – sigh! I got side-tracked by Shuggie Bain, which was so wonderful, yet so sad that it derailed the rest of my planned reading. I drifted to Alexander McCall Smith, and then a couple of easier books from my list. My end result being 3/10 planned books. Eep! I hope I do better with my Fall reading list.

How did your reading go this summer?

I totally understand putting off a “heavy, deep and real” book until the colder months! This is a great variety of novels. My summer reading was less than it should have been but I discovered a historical fiction/romance series that I fell in love with! “Touch the Sky” and “Daughter of the Sky” by Alison Blasdell (https://alisonblasdell.com/). They can be read out of order and I actually found I liked the second book “Daughter of the Sky” better. It is a paranormal, historical romance (don’t see that too often!) about two women living life in different time periods, but with a mysterious connection. There is a lot of heart in this book and the dialogue felt authentic. With the twists and turns throughout I would not classify this as your normal romantic fiction. Our main characters are a woman who lives in modern times and one in the far past. Both caught up in their own romances, and even dangers, the reader is left to find the link. I read the entire thing in a weekend. Cannot wait for the next one!!! If you check it out I would love to know what you think
    Happy Fall reading!

  3. Thanks so much for linking to my post! I think we all have those months where we’re side-tracked by mood reads rather than following our TBRs. It sounds like you still read a lot of good books this summer!

Yeah, I am a big mood reader, so I always have difficulty with planning my reads – especially the emotionally hard books.
