If you love books, you’ll want to make the most of the time that you get to spend reading them! All too often we get interrupted right in the middle of a crucial scene, or find ourselves distracted from the plot because we aren’t quite comfortable enough.
Read on to discover the five essential features of the perfect reading nook.
Privacy
This is top of the list for a reason! You can try to create privacy by simply telling your family to leave you alone while you’re reading, but all too often those requests go completely ignored.
Try creating your reading nook in one of the less busy areas of the house, ideally in a room people won’t be using. A basement is great, or your bedroom can be an excellent spot for a reading nook for this reason—take a corner or even a window seat to transform into your own literary oasis.
Comfort
Comfort is important when you’re designing your perfect reading nook. You’ll need to center it around a comfortable chair that meets your reading needs. For example, you may want to think about the following:
- Back support: if you’re someone who reads for long periods of time, it’s important to have a chair that supports your back so that you don’t end up with back pain.
- Putting your feet up: the ultimate in luxury! Think about either getting a chair that is large enough for you to put your feet up, or get yourself a foot stool.
- A recliner: sometimes you feel like sitting up… sometimes you definitely don’t! If you can, getting a reclining chair is great because it allows you to be positioned however you feel most comfortable on the day.
It’s also a good idea to get a small table for your reading nook, so that you have somewhere to put your coffee and snacks… or more books.
Air Conditioning
Air conditioning is about more than keeping you cool. It also purifies the air, meaning that you are less likely to come into contact with irritants such as dust and pet hair that could cause you to start sneezing. Nothing takes you out of a good story quite like a sneezing fit!

Lighting
It’s important to get the right lighting in your reading nook; partly so that you enjoy yourself more, and partly so that you don’t get eye strain.
If possible, it’s a great idea to position your nook next to a window as natural light is wonderful for reading. If not, or if you like to read at night, be sure to invest in a reading lamp to give you all the light you need.
Snacks
Make your reading time truly enjoyable by treating yourself to your favorite snacks and drinks. You could go all out and get a mini fridge, or simply take the time to make yourself a pitcher of juice and a plate of cookies. Just be sure that you have somewhere to put it.
