I owe you one

I generally love chick-lits from Sophie Kinsella. Her heroines and heroes are so down-to-earth and relatable. I definitely felt like I could relate to Fixie – the heroine of I owe you one.

Book Synopsis

Fixie Farr has always lived by her father’s motto: “Family first.” But since her dad passed away, leaving his charming housewares store in the hands of his wife and children, Fixie spends all her time picking up the slack from her siblings instead of striking out on her own. The way Fixie sees it, if she doesn’t take care of her father’s legacy, who will? It’s simply not in her nature to say no to people.

So when a handsome stranger in a coffee shop asks her to watch his laptop for a moment, Fixie not only agrees—she ends up saving it from certain disaster. Turns out the computer’s owner is an investment manager. To thank Fixie for her quick thinking, Sebastian scribbles an IOU on a coffee sleeve and attaches his business card. But Fixie laughs it off—she’d never actually claim an IOU from a stranger. Would she?

My Review

Like I said earlier, I thought Fixie was very relatable. She’s pragmatic, the caretaker of everyone in the family (very much like Eleanor from Sense and Sensibility – who I also love).

Because she’s so practical, it’s easy for everyone in her family to relinquish their responsibilities and depend on her to take care of everything. And she’s happy to do it for the most part.

But when her childhood romance reenters her life expecting her to take care of him too, things starts to change. While trying to wrangle her loser boyfriend a job, she ends up getting close to Seb (a guy she meets in a coffee shop) and fireworks start to happen.

I liked the characters and the concept of the story is really cute. However, I did wish that more time was spent on the romance. Most of the book is about Fixie dealing with her family’s problems, that in the end, the romance felt like an afterthought.

So, this is more like a family/domestic story than a romance story. But if you go in prepared for that, this is a very enjoyable book indeed.

After finishing this book, I realised I have read every Sophie Kinsella book published 🙂 . She’s definitely one of my must-read authors for sure.

I think I’ve only read one of Kinsella’s but thought it was cute. This one sounds fun.

Yes, they are not great literature, but I like them for the fluffy, breezy reads they are.

As it happens, I have not read Sophie Kinsella at all. But I’ve been curious about this author.
