This week’s teaser is from To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway.
This was a book I read and didn’t finish many, many years back. Looking back, I can’t think why I didn’t finish it. So far in, I am loving the book. Here’s the very first sentence of the book, which reeled me in. I love a good scene setting.
You know how it is there early in the morning in Havana with the bums still asleep against the walls of the buildings; before even the ice wagons come by with the ice for the bars?
Well, we came across the square from the dock to the Pearl of San Francisco Cafe to get coffee and there was only one beggar awake in the square and he was getting a drink out of the fountain.

Did you see what he did there with the very first sentence? It was almost like he was talking to me one-on-one telling me about something that happened to him.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
- BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
- Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
I’ve not read this one but you are right about the style of writing in the teaser. I think reading is like food, something that was not to your taste when you were younger sometimes becomes a favourite later on.
