This is a book that started with a lot of promise. Here is a nice teaser.
There were three volumes in all. Dog-eared green covers with faded gold lettering. I stowed them at the back of the bottom drawer and covered them with my shawl, careful to fold it right around so they were completely concealed.
Mr. Hamilton had been clear. The Holy Bible was acceptable, but any reading material beyond that was most likely injurious and must be presented for his approval or otherwise risk confiscation.
I was not a rebel – indeed, back then I had a fierce sense of duty – but to live without Holmes and Watson was unthinkable.
~ The House at Riverton by Kate Morton
Unfortunately, the middle is dragging a bit, and I am not as vested in the characters as I thought I’d be at this stage. Hopefully, things start getting a bit livelier as the book goes on.
Have you read this book? Thoughts?
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
- BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
- Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
I’ve read it! The beginning’s the best part of it really. Plus Kate Morton has some writing tics that drove me CRAZY when I was reading The House at Riverton.
@Jenny: Oh, sad to hear that 🙁 I just got through the dull bits to when Robbie makes his re-entry again and starts an affair with Hannah. I like the love affair so was hoping this means it gets interesting again.
Nice cover and teaser!

Interesting teaser. I would be lost without my books. My teasers this week are from Shelter by Harlan Coben and Dick Francis’s Bloodline by Felix Francis. Happy reading!
It’s been a few years since I’ve read the book but I remember enjoying it enough (though I think I preferred The Forgotten Garden and The Distant Hours). Thanks for posting this teaser, hope it picks up for you!

mine is up: http://bookskeepmesane.wordpress.com/2013/07/16/teaser-tuesday-july-16-2013/
@bookskeepmesane: I know, I love that one too. The book does have some seriously good writing. It’s kind of moving into soap-opera territory in the middle…let’s see how it goes. If you do read it, you got to review it on your blog.
I haven’t read this one, but my dad did and he ‘liked it’ but said it did drag a bit. Love the teaser, it certainly does have a promising start! 🙂 Hope it grips you again soon.
I like that teaser. I haven’t read this one, mostly because I heard such mixed reactions. My teaser is at Beth Fish Reads.
@Beth F: This is a bit up and down for me too 🙁
Great teaser. Thanks for sharing. Hope the book gets livelier for you.
Mine is from The Witches Dream by Victoria Danann.
