Teaser Tuesdays – The Handmaid’s Tale

Why on earth haven’t I read this book before? I started it this weekend, and it’s just mind-blowing. Why did I think Margaret Atwood or dystopia isn’t for me?

Here are a couple of awesome quotes from this book:

I would like to believe this is a story I’m telling. I need to believe it. I must believe it. Those who can believe that such stories are only stories have a better chance. If it’s a story I’m telling, then I have control over the ending. Then there will be an ending, to the story, and real life will come after it. I can pick up where I left off.

And here’s the second one:

Sanity is a valuable possession; I hoard it the way people once hoarded money. I save it, so I will have enough, when the time comes.

~ The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

@Marie: There is an Advent with Atwood event on? I need to get with that. Many people have commented that I need to try Oryx and Crake after this. Maybe this event would kickstart an Atwood reading phase…let’s see. Anyway, I think you will enjoy this book, I am relishing every minute with it 🙂

  2. I know how you feel! I had this really terrible notion that Atwood was a stuffy writer until I read “Oryx and Crake” for a class and I absolutely fell in love with her writing and have gone back to read everything! If you loved The Handmaids Tale, definitely check out Oryx and Crake next.
