Teaser Tuesdays: Lady Chatterley’s Lover

Recently there was this huge discussion regarding male authors vs female authors after a controversial comment from V.S.Naipaul. There is also this very entertaining quiz where people were asked to guess whether a particular paragraph was written by a man or a woman.

Well, I got most of those quiz answers wrong, and if the following teaser was part of the quiz I would have gotten that wrong too. I just can’t believe that the following paragraph was written by a man. It just seems more Virginia Woolfish than something I would find in a D.H.Lawrence book that was banned because of too much smut.

This book is definitely turning out to be a surprise!

And however one might sentimentalize it, this sex business was one of the most ancient, sordid connexions and subjections. People who glorified it were mostly men. Women had always known there was something better, something higher. And now they knew it more definitely than ever. The beautiful pure freedom of a woman was infinitely more wonderful than any sexual love. The only unfortunate thing was that men lagged so far behind women in the matter.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

That quiz was hard! I only got four of them right, and some of the ones I got wrong were from books I’ve actually read.

  3. This book’s been sitting on my shelf for a really long time! Have to get to it soon and no it definitely does not seem like something a guy might say!

  4. I love that! I just tried my first D.H. Lawrence a few months ago with Sons & Lovers. Haven’t tackled Lady Chatterley’s Lover yet. Thanks for the inspiration to do so! If you get a chance, my teaser is here.

Wow! you are right that quote doesn’t sound like it is written by a guy 🙂

I hope you enjoy the rest of the book.
