Things We Saw and Did in Pondicherry

The last week of December turned out to be unexpectedly active. None of us had planned any travel at all. I had a vague hope that I may be able to take a couple of days off and visit my family in Chennai, but considering how hectic December was, I was okay with just quietly unwinding at home too.

Then an unplanned argument arose at home – we were arguing about something really random, and in the course of the argument, we decided that a break was in order. It was only the next day when K called me at work (when I was neck-deep in work!!), that I realized that

  1. He was serious.
  2. All arrangements were made and I could not back out.
  3. And, that in spite of all the inconvenience of finishing up work, applying for leave, packing, etc…I really, really wanted to go and take a break

Within the space of a couple of hours that evening, we decided on places to go and see, booked rooms, and arranged transport. In Chennai of course, we stayed at mom’s but we also planned a short getaway to Pondicherry, which is fast becoming one of my favorite places to visit.

I remember Pondicherry (Pondy as we call it), being a sleepy, one-horse town in the nineties. But the recent emphasis on tourism and arts has made it one of the more charming and eclectic places to visit in South India.

When we went though it was raining and we couldn’t take advantage of the beach or our hotel’s sweet swimming pool causing the snubnose to pout and declare the trip a total loss. However, we still managed to have a good time eating and shopping, and generally taking in the sights.

We were late starting from home and it was past two when we reached Pondy. We checked in at our hotel, and immediately rushed for some food. A quick scan on my Foursquare app told us that Le Hidesign Cafe was nearby and was well-reviewed and so we made our way there.

Here are some photos:

I can’t recommend Le Hidesign cafe highly enough. The place is quite unassuming and they take their time with the food. However, there was a plate of cheeselings to satisfy the kids, and the beer was nice and chill, so very quickly we moved into laid-back holiday mood. The food is mainly continental, but with enough variety in both veg and non-veg sections. I had ravioli stuffed with mushrooms, and it was just heaven. My father-in-law loved his grilled chicken, it was done to perfection, and the chicken very tender. K was also pleased with his spaghetti with prawns. They also made a special omelet for the snubnose, which she enjoyed.

The best part of the lunch was the service. The waitress was so kind enough to walk the piglet around the cafe while we ate our lunch in peace. It’s a small place, and he was always within our eye sight but it was still pleasant to be able to eat our lunch without interruptions while she walked around stopping him from licking the floor, and other such embarrassing and gross behavior. By the end of the lunch, the two had become fast friends.

My only regret is that we were too full to attempt what I am sure were the utterly divine desserts on the menu. What makes it even sadder is that for some reason or the other during our entire trip, we never had any desserts although Pondicherry supposedly has the most awesome bakeries :( .

Anyway, post-lunch was sight-seeing and shopping. We went to the Promenade where the snubnose blew off some of her excess energy.

For once, she was happy to mug for the camera and we managed to get some lovely shots with her and K in front of the statue of Lord Dupleix, and on the beach.

We also paused to take a shot of Le Dupleix hotel. Somehow, I don’t think we did justice to the architecture of this place. It’s really a lovely building.

We then did a lot of walking around looking for antique shops. K likes antique furniture,I don’t, and when the opportunity arose I did a quick detour to go to Yaka Home Design, which is a home shop that just suits my style. I loved their range of cane outdoor furniture

Since they say they also do custom orders, I am dreaming about having some cane furniture made to order for the terrace garden in our new house. For now though, I picked out the cutest white flower lampshade that I am totally in love with. My only regret? I should have gone all the way and just got the lampshade in the largest size they have :) .

We then moved on to Amethyst/La Maison Rouge. Amethyst is a famous cafe and shop in Chennai and one of my favorite hangouts, and so I wanted to explore the Pondicherry one as well.

Like the Chennai Amethyst, this one is also an old colonial house, with some very nice things. The atmosphere was also lovely enough that we were willing to rest our feet and try some of their cocktails, but their service was so unenthusiastic, that we left within minutes. Beautiful but very unwelcoming place! I did love the Titanic chandelier on the ceiling made of old plastic bottles. So creative! Really, my trip seems to have been all about lighting :)

By now, it was late, and we were ravenously hungry so we popped over to The Promenade Hotel for dinner. They have a famed Christmas buffet and our expectations were high. Unfortunately, they were too high. The buffet spread was average, and so was the a-la carte food we ordered. What was nice was the ambience. We took an outside table, the weather was pleasant, and the sea-breeze very calming. We ended up having a nice time anyway.

And then back to the hotel and bed. What a hectic day it was!

Btw, this isn’t our first trip to Pondicherry, here is an older blog post about an earlier trip we took to Pondicherry with the snubnose.

Loving Poshlyfe

Of late, I am really getting sucked into online shopping sites. Especially, when it comes to such cutie sites like Poshlyfe. I came across this site randomly clicking away through various blogs, and now I am just in love, love, love.

This is an online shopping site for kids. Currently, the number of brands and the size of the inventory is quite small, but they make up for it with major cuteness…

Some of the stuff I love are:

Isn’t the stuff just too cute? I don’t know much about the site as yet, but I am definitely book-marking it to see if anything goes on sale. The prices are just very high for me to even consider purchasing it full-price :(

Online Shopping at J Crew and a Hot Little Tip for Global Shopaholics

July 31 was my birthday and I was scrambling around for a last-minute present for the snubnose. Yes, you read that right. Ever since the snubnose (and now the piglet) came into my life, I like to celebrate my birthday by giving them a surprise gift.

This year, I was all sorted with the piglet. I got him an awesome rocking horse. But I was left stranded with snubnose. She’s now at the awkward age (6 years old) where I really struggle for toys/games that I approve of and which I know she will enjoy. The snubnose’s hints about Barbie and cooking toys were not for me. My tentative hints of books or e-books were not okay with her. Finally, I was left with getting her new clothes and shoes – something she’s badly in need of anyway considering her recent growth spurt.

The only snag was finding the time to go to the shops and find something nice for her. Online shopping, it would have to be.

In the last year or so, many of the fashion bloggers I follow have raved about J Crew stuff. I was like hmmm….I remembered it as the boring preppy style shop that stocked tons of pull-overs.

And then, I finally went to their site and browsed to see the prettiest candy pinks and sweet girly styles. Wow, they have really upped their merchandise. Hmmm, but the prices are too high especially for people living in India. So, I wander on to their Sale section, hmmm…the prices are not bad here. If you are okay with Zara/Mango/M&S prices, then the J Crew sale has some nice stuff.

But wait, shipping to India is Rs. 1500/-, that negates any kind of sale deal. And then, then…I see an orange ticker saying

Hello World, become an insider and enjoy free expedited and duty-free shopping

OMG!!! I signed up, immediately picked out something sparkly and shiny for the snubnose, and checked out before I could change my mind.

Within the next 2 days, I see the box at my door couriered through DHL. This is seriously pain-free shopping! No shipping, no duty! And packaged so beautifully, half the thrill for the snubnose was opening her package and finding her surprise.

Here are some photos showing the sequence of events :)

There was a satisfactory I love you mommy moment of hug and kisses, which of course I have not captured. Let’s just say that it made my day :)

So, back to the topic of J Crew and online shopping, I highly recommend it. The shopping experience is great, the process is super-smooth and easy especially for a newbie like me. And the global insider offer just rocks!!! I don’t know for how long they have this offer, so go and sign up now!!!

Do you do a lot of online shopping? What do you buy? And where? Do share your experiences. I would love to know.

Huge Shopping Spree at the Strand Book Sale

Every year Strand Book Store holds a beyond awesome sale. The range of books (particularly children’s books) is terrific and the prices are so good, it’s really, really hard for us to restrain ourselves.

Last weekend, we went on the last day of the sale hoping against hope that some good stuff was still remaining. And we got lucky! Although there wasn’t much left for adults, there was still tons of new children’s books being stocked and restocked.

Here are some of our most exciting finds…

Our total haul - almost 20 books after massive and ruthless editing in the store

Apart from the snubnose’s regular fictional interests – Barbie, Spot, Strawberry Shortcake, and so on…I was able to steer her interests in new directions.

One of the books that we are both eager to read is about ancient Egypt.

I was in awe over the beautiful illustrations and the depth of the information. The snubnose loved the bright colors.

And guess what, this book cost about Rs.70/- only on sale (approx 1.5 dollars USD). Isn’t that a great deal?

From grade 1 onwards, the snubnose starts Spanish, so I was super-thrilled to find a simple but fun Spanish book to introduce her to basic Spanish words.

Hopefully we have enough stuff on hand to keep the snubnose entertained and away from television/video games till regular school starts again in June.

I kind of doubt it though…she’s already run through about 5 books in the space of 3 days :D .

I Heart Morph Maternity

Have you heard of Morph Maternity? This is a brand that has come to my attention now that I am on the hunt for smart clothes that are also practical after having a baby.

Morph Maternity offers everything a new mom is likely to need, but what really gets my attention is the clothes for mommy. In India, it’s not so easy to get smart, affordable maternity/nursing wear. So Morph Maternity really fills a gaping hole in the market.

I love the awesome mommy-friendly tunics and tops below.

Very pretty, right? And doesn’t scream matronly. I also love the way the clothes are presented on the website. There is enough information about sizing and style that customers should not find it difficult to buy stuff from the brand sight unseen. They also let you know what stage of pregnancy the clothes are appropriate for/nursing options that are available. Very useful!

For example, the description for the green kurta is as follows:

Standard Overlap Nursing Kurta, Embroidered Patch with contrast colour at Neckline and Hemline,Cap Sleeve, Patent Applied Leak proof layer at bust region, Fit during and post pregnancy

Plus, they have cash on delivery options and free shipping for orders from India over Rs. 500/-. Really, you can’t lose!

I also recommend the elasticated salwars and kameezes for expecting moms. No more fiddling about with the stupid “nada”. I wish I had heard about this brand earlier during my pregnancy, I would have definitely picked up tons more stuff instead of relying on oversized kurtas and my one and only maternity jeans :( .

It’s not too late for me to pick up some snazzy post-partum nursing clothes though ;) .

Amazon Offers Limited Free Shipping to India!

I was super-thrilled when I read this post on Recommend Books. Amazon.co.uk is offering limited free shipping to India for all orders worth 25 GBP and above. Books, music, and DVDs qualify for this offer.

For some reason, this offer expires by September 30, 2011. Hopefully, they are just testing the waters to see the demand. Once they realize people would be falling over themselves to get some off the latest books for a decent price + free shipping, they might decide to continue the offer.

Fingers crossed. No harm hoping, right? ;)

Happy Shopping!

Wordless Wednesdays: A Daughter is a Sure-fire way to Break the Bank!

I know I spend way too much on my daughter, but I can’t help it…everything she tries on seems to be just made for her :) .

Where Have I Been? Well, Shopping of Course

Okay, this is not your regular shopping for books/clothes/shoes. We are in the midst of building our new house, and so we have been shopping for big-ticket items…like kitchen sets, or floor tiles, or taps, or, light fixtures, or, or…the list seems just endless :(

This has been a totally eye-opening experience for me. Earlier, I hardly glanced at advertisements for such house hold design items. Now, we not only scan them thoroughly, we have clipped them out, and created a binder (a sort of hodge-podge collage of all the things we like).

The next step of course has been to actually go to all the shops, and try to match up our ideas with reality. Most of our dreams ended up getting dashed on the twin rocks of availability or pricing. Basically, things turned out to be far more expensive than we anticipated, so we re-planned and re-budgeted time and again. Tedious!

So, of course, when we come across a pleasant surprise now and then, it’s absolutely thrilling. And here, I’ll share one such find.

For long, K and I have debated the need for a modular kitchen. I wanted one, he didn’t (too expensive). And that’s where things stood until we came across a really remarkable thing – steep (and I’m talking almost 60% discounts) on display models in showrooms. Yup, if you are lucky, those fancy showroom models can be bought right off the shelf … provided the cabinets suit your kitchen size and design.

We were super-lucky to land one such deal from House of Johnson. Primarily, they deal with floor tiles, but they also have pretty good kitchens on offer. And when the sales assistant mentioned in passing that the display units could be bought as is…we immediately rushed back with our architectural drawings, and it all matched perfectly!

Now, I am happy and K is happy.

We found out that quite a few showrooms offload their display merchandise in this way. However, it is rarely advertised. It pays to ask, and negotiate, and be patient. We practically parked ourselves in the shop. Hey! It’s a lot of money, and a huge decision to make. Finally, I think to just get rid of us, he threw in a dishwasher into the deal as well.

I couldn’t be more excited about our new kitchen! Here’s a rather blurry photo of the kitchen display, and please ignore my hand popping in the corner :)

Btw, there is no loss of quality. It’s so cheap just because it’s already been assembled.

A Fashion Giveaway

Normally, I feature only book giveaways on my blog, but well, books are not the only thing ruling my life. Like most girls, shoes (and clothes, and bags) are another obsession with me :D .

And I’m sure many among you may also share the same passion. So, for those fashion-loving bibliophiles, my twitter buddy Mae is hosting a shopbop giveaway on her blog -http://thereafterish.wordpress.com/2011/02/23/giveaway-100-shopbop-spree-gemma-redux-jewelry-wishlist/

Rush, rush, rush to enter the competition. And yeah, she has a real cool blog too :)

Christmas Shopping …and Other News!

Why am I shopping? Well, we are travelling. Yippee! We are taking the snubnose to Disneyland in Hong Kong, after which we plan on a little R & R in Thailand (Pattaya, Phuket, and Bangkok), with a detour to Macau. I am so excited that the plans I was mysteriously referring to here finally seem to be happening.

We have planned this trip since October, but K needed to get his passport renewed, and it took ages for the new passport to come. We were almost on the verge of cancelling our travel plans when last week it finally turned up. Whew! Two whole months of stress :( . Thankfully, both Thailand and Hong Kong have visa on entry, so we don’t have to worry about getting visas before we travel. We would never have made it otherwise.

Anyway, all that stress is now forgotten, and it was now time to shop for the trip :)

There is going to be at least 1 massive party that we plan to attend and I had to make sure that I have more than one dress option. To be honest, it was just an excuse to shop ;) . Somehow, I end up shopping only before travelling or while travelling. It just seems so much more fun shopping for an occasion rather than just day-to-day boring stuff.

Here are 2 options I finally came up with:

The Casual Dress

Option 1: The Casual Dress

The Formal Dress

Option 2: The Formal (Kinda) Dress

In fact, I am so excited about the black and white dress, I just had to take a photo of me wearing it at home, even if it is a crappy, camera phone photo!

Crappy camera phone ugh!

Crappy camera phone ugh! Smudged mirror double ugh!

Oh! I am so excited to be ending this year’s last blog post on such a fun note!

Here’s wishing all you readers a Merry Christmas and a smashing new year. Have fun you guys. See you all next year!
