Blogging – Year in Review

So, it’s that time of the year when WordPress sends you a little report about how your blog fared. Here’s what they sent…

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

19,000 people fit into the new Barclays Center to see Jay-Z perform. This blog was viewed about 130,000 times in 2012. If it were a concert at the Barclays Center, it would take about 7 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

To me, it doesn’t say very much at all. Honestly, I blogged a lot less this year. But, I am a bit startled to find that my most popular posts were those written two years back. This was the case last year as well, and it feels a bit weird to me that people are reading such old posts, when I have moved on so much from my old blogging style (or at least I think I have). I mean one of my most popular posts is about a coffee shop I went to in 2010, the coffee shop doesn’t even exist any more!! So strange.

Apart from that, the report is a nice little pat on the back for all WordPress bloggers and I love that WordPress does this each year to remind us about blogging milestones.

About 2013 blogging goals…well, I have one, but so far it seems so out there, so out of my league, that I am not even going to talk about it in this post. It’s something I have been thinking about for a while, but if and when I eventually get around to accomplishing it, I will definitely point to this post and say, hey…I achieved my goal after all.

So what are you planning for your blog in 2013? Or for your life? I have made tons of resolutions but those need an entirely new post.

And hey, here’s wishing you a very happy and joyful 2013.

Wish you a very happy 2013

My 2011 Blogging Report and Happy New Year to All

WordPress.com has very kindly sent a blog report summary this year to all users of its platform. I found it interesting enough to post the report here and acknowledge the great readers of this blog for the support and kind words that inspire me to keep going even during some hectic personal times. I have summarized the report and my thoughts in this blog post. If you want to click here to see the complete report.

First of, I need to acknowledge the top commentators this year:

  • Jenny
  • Veens
  • Priya Iyer who is sadly not blogging any more. Priya, if you are reading this, I really miss your blog. Please come back!
  • Laav
  • Smita

Of course, I also have to thank the many quiet readers on this blog. I appreciate you all just the same :) .

I also need to give a special thanks to WordPress.com for featuring my blog on their Themes page and Judith for hosting the Literary Giveaway bloghop and sending over so many new visitors to my blog.

The latter part of 2011 was a little blah in terms of blogging. I have never been a very proliferate blogger but 2011 was pretty sad even by my standards. Only 99 posts! Pregnancy, childbirth, and now severe sleep deprivation have left me too drained to even pick up a remotely complex book. I have ended up sticking to gothic romances, and run of the mill thrillers, none of which inspire me to blog about it :( . Things are starting to follow a routine now, and so hopefully I will be able to read one or two interesting books that I have waiting on my shelf.

Another nice thing about my 2011 blogging year is the upgrade of my Google page rank. For the past 2 years, it has been a steady page rank 3. This year because of the increased user activity and back links, it has been upgraded to 4 and it’s something I am outwardly rather blase about to my friends, but inwardly, I am super thrilled :D .

So, that’s my thoughts on blogging in 2011.

How was your 2011? Are you happy about your blogging life last year?

I also hope all of you had a great Christmas and New Year and wish you a very happy and prosperous 2012!

Wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2012

Wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2012

Pleasant Bloggy Surprise

I was pleasantly surprised by my blog statistics yesterday. For some time, my blog has been comfortably static – regular bibliophile visitors turned blog buddies, along with real life family and friends.

So, today when I logged in and saw my site visits have almost doubled in a single day, I knew I had to investigate further. Could it be my Google doodle video post going viral? No, it was something else…getting featured on the WordPress.com theme page for Selecta that has resulted in so many page views.

Wow! Getting linked from WordPress makes a huuge difference! Thanks WordPress.com for featuring my blog. It’s a great blogging platform (have never looked back since I migrated from Blogger four years back), and Selecta is an awesome theme!

Created a New Page for my Blogroll

I have been lazy about maintaining my blogroll for a really long time. It got to the point where half my links led to deleted or retired blogs. Finally decided to stop tweeting about it and actually moving and updating my link list. It’s still a work in progress, but I have at least weeded out the broken links.

My updated and still being updated blogroll is now here. Because my final ambition is to have a lovely long list with all my favorite bloggers, I have decided a widget on the side is not going to be enough and have decided to dedicate an entire page to it :)

Any bloggers who want to share their links/exchange links are welcome to contact me at nishikk@gmail.com.

Cheers!

Awesome Just Write Feature from WordPress.com

Four years ago, I moved my blog from Blogger to WordPress and have never looked back. My reasons for the move were:

  • Ability to use tags and categories to label my posts, instead of just using labels.
  • The Misty look theme, which I loved, and still have a soft corner for.
  • Akismet spam blocker

I definitely did not move for the writing/usability experience. Most people I know who have moved from Blogger to WordPress find the dashboard slow, clunky and user-unfriendly. The editor window was no great shakes. But all that’s changed now. The new WordPress dashboard is super-fast, and best of all the distraction free writing is awesome.

Normally, I run out of steam at around 500 words or so…probably because the older editing window was so cluttered. But with this new window, I just banged out an 800+ word post as easy as pie. Maybe there is something to this distraction free writing after all.

Whether me churning out 800 + word long posts is good or bad…well, you be the judge of that :D

Yay! I won an award!

The Versatile Blogger Award

The Versatile Blogger Award

The Confused Yuppie has been so kind enough to present me with the Versatile Blogger award, and I am seriously so thrilled. I try really hard that my blog should reflect all my interests (not just books), and so getting this award is great!

The rules of this award is:

Link back to the person who gave you the award, write seven random facts about yourself and then spread the love to 15 other blogs that you think are versatile, good, etc. Oh, and contact them to let them know you gave them the award!

OK, so here are some of my favorite versatile bloggers:

  • Dummies of the Year – Hilarious blog
  • Casey’s Korner – Because I know I will always like the books she recommends.
  • Picky Girl – For the wide variety of books she reviews, and for her discerning “pickiness”
  • So Many Books – Because I always find something very interesting when I hop over there.

Now on to the 7 random (did I mention boring ;) ) facts about me:

  • As a child, I wanted to be a veterinarian or a writer, but when I realized that being a vet also involves delivering babies, I decided to become a writer instead :) .
  • I have an extremely active inner life. You remember Ally McBeal who played entire imaginary sequences in her head. Yep, I can totally relate :) .
  • There’s not a single day that goes by where I don’t read a book. I also carry one with me wherever I go in case I am left waiting for something (doc appointment, school visit), I am always prepared with something to read.
  • I need to know the sun signs of people around me.
  • I love the endorphin high I get when I run/swim. Addicted to it, I actually get withdrawal symptoms if I stop for more than 3-4 days. Equally addicted to green tea. Two healthy addictions, completely negated by my addiction to chocolates and salty snacks.
  • Although I read so much, I am not short-sighted (I do use glasses to reduce my eye strain when I am at work on my comp, but I can function perfectly well without them as well). My grandma’s dire warnings when she would catch me reading comics with a torch late at night never really materialized.
  • I hate wasting time in beauty parlors. Some of my friends find facials, manicures, pedicures, and so on relaxing. Me, on the few occasions I go, I just can’t wait to get out of there.

Social Media Experiments

Lately, I’ve tried out some new tools to increase my social media space, all with varying degrees of success.

I first heard of Klout through my Twitter feed when someone posted their klout scores. I knew immediately that I had to go and take a look-see.

What is klout?

It’s an online tool that people use to measure their influence on Twitter. It’s fairly simple and easy to use. Just sign up at the klout website, enter your Twitter ID, and within a day you have a detailed report. Here is a brief screenshot summarizing my report:

My Klout scores

My Klout scores

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the summary tallied closely with my estimate of my Twitter presence. However, I find the little square in the figure above unnecessarily complicated. It does not really in any way reflect the text on the right. But, other than this little crib…I like my score, and I like the methodology by which klout has arrived at the score. They don’t just count the number of followers or even the number of tweets. They basically look at the response generated by each tweet, which sounds eminently sensible to me. It weeds out spammers, and hopefully those folks who are tweeting just for the sake of increasing their klout.

However, for an amateur blogger/tweep like me…using klout doesn’t seem to make too much sense apart from a purely curiosity value. But for professionals looking for business opportunities, it seems like a useful tool to track your effectiveness. However I know I’m not going to be tracking my score all that often.

Foursquare: I knew all about Foursquare for a long time of course. I just didn’t realize that I could use it effectively in India as well. However, my local Coffee Day disabused me of that idea. A large poster announcing discounts for Foursquare users (based on the number of check-ins) prompted me to try this out. Cafe Coffee Day is apparently offering 15% discount for users who have checked in 3 times into the same outlet. If the user is a Mayor of that outlet, Coffee Day serves them with a free coffee and a 20% discount on every 3rd check-in from that user.

Note: The offer is currently available only in Bangalore outlets.

Anyway, back to the topic of Foursquare. The physical incentive offered by Coffee Day prompted me to sign up, but I quickly realized how useful Foursquare actually is only during my recent trip to Chennai. The iPhone app rocks! If I am wandering around and realize I am hungry, I can quickly check out outlets close by, along with reviews of users who have already checked in there. Cool! Checking in to every place I go is fast becoming an obsession…what with all the unlocking of different badges that are available…and of course, let’s not forget the monetary incentives that I am sure more outlets will start offering ;) .

I am still playing my way around it though, and am still too wary to check in when I am actually at the place. Just some vague sense of insecurity…not sure whether it is very wise to do so especially on empty highway spots, or during late night jaunts. I am looking to enhance my friends circle though, and hopefully can get more use out of it than I presently can.

And last but not the least, I have become addicted to Instagram. This is again an app that I downloaded and now use to post photos onto my Twitter feed. I love the ease and simplicity of the app. All I need to do is take a photo, apply an appropriate filter from the filters list (I could do with more variety of filters though), and there I have a nifty edited photo with an appropriate caption. Uploading that to Twitter/Facebook/Posterous/Tumblr is as simple as enabling it once through the configuration settings. So cool and easy to use.

I like the effects, and it’s making taking pictures (something of a chore normally) fun to do. The photos come out looking great, and if not great, well…the Instagram effects will more than adequately camouflage the inept photography :) ). What’s not to like? Well, nothing at all in my view :D

Have you tried any of these tools? What are your thoughts/opinions? I would love to know.

A Bad Case of RSI

My blog posts have decreased in frequency of late…and there are a couple of reasons for that. Tons of work to complete, combined with less time and inclination to read, and … this awful, chronic pain in my wrists :( .

I first noticed this sometime last month, but ignored it thinking it would go away by itself. Really smart, right? It was only when I was in such acute pain that day-to-day activities such as chopping veggies, or even turning the pages of my paperback caused such agonies that I acknowledged that there was a problem and hauled myself over to the orthopaedic.

Turns out it is some kind of RSI…oof…I had no idea this could be so painful and crippling. Basically, my lifestyle is such that I am always attached to some device or the other. If I am not working on my laptop, then I am blogging/tweeting/facebooking, and yes, even reading books on my iPad. Looks like something had got to give, and turns out it was my wrists :( .

Thankfully, things are better now. I have been scheduled for regular physiotherapy for the next couple of weeks, after which the doc will reassess my condition.

As it stands, I am already feeling more comfortable using my hands for all my daily work. Thank goodness!

So anyways, I am back to blogging, and reading books and you can look forward to tons of reviews coming up!

Another milestone I will be celebrating this month is my blogoversary, and I am going to be celebrating that with a giveaway! International to boot!! So, keep looking in, I am back, and hopefully things will look up this month :)

So, I Changed my Theme Again…

If the series of theme changes makes it look that I am totally fickle, then I have to plead not guilty. I was quite happy with my old Vigilance and Pressrow themes for the longest time.

All this confusion started early this year when I got tempted by the series of themes being issued by the WordPress theme team. Each theme sounded more intriguing than the last and I got sucked into the vortex of the almost monthly theme change.

I did try out Coraline earlier this year and I really liked my blog look a lot. However, then the negative feedback rolled in…it’s too bright and brash, the 3-columns make everything look very cramped, and so on. I immediately made a jump to Paperpunch, but never really felt comfortable with it. It seemed rather dull after Coraline, and no amount of wallpapering could make me like the fonts.

So, yes, I have decided to switch back to Coraline, and to commit to it. Sure, it’s a bit brash/bright, and so on, but it’s more me somehow than the rest of the themes I tried out this year.

So, here in public, I state my intention of sticking to this theme (and its variations). I love the fonts, the customizability, the header appearance, everything in short…so I have decided to publicly state my preference (in the hope that it will stop me tampering with my blog appearance yet again). I have a feeling the constantly changing appearance is impacting my blog viewership, and that is something I definitely don’t want. Also, this theme makes me want to update my blog more. Isn’t that silly? but it’s true! I have been in a sort of blogging funk since the time I changed to Paperpunch (not that it’s a bad theme, but it just does not suit me).

So, Coraline it is for now…or at least until Vigilance,Pressrow, /Journalist/, or Twenty ten themes get some interesting upgrades :)

What do you think? Would you like me to stick to this look (or some other look that you liked?), or do you like the idea of a blog appearance that keeps changing?
