Tips to understanding your dreams

Some people tend to not think of their dreams as something that could be important. They tend to ignore that it could be something significant. Sigmund Freud himself said that dreams can serve as windows to our an aspect of our lives that others cannot see, and sometimes we ourselves are not aware of.

Have you ever had a dream that you felt bothered about? It may be a dream that you seem to dream about more than once or a dream that you just can’t get out of your head even after a few days or sometimes even weeks? It may be time to delve deeper to understand your dreams. Check out the tips below to help you get started.

  1. Write it down as soon as you wake up – get yourself a dream journal, and, as soon as you wake up, write down everything you remember in your dream. It has to be the first thing that you do because if you focus on doing other things first, like eating breakfast or taking a shower, there is a big possibility may prove to be significant. If you can’t remember the whole dream, write down the details that you do remember. Make it a habit as soon as you wake up so that you will be able to see which dreams seem to make a regular occurrence.
  2. Remember the feelings you had during the dream – aside from writing down the details of the dream, consider writing down what you were feeling during the dream. Were you that you will forget. Maybe not forget everything about the dream, but certain aspects of it that anxious? Angry? Afraid? Write down your impression so that you can analyze it later on.
  3. See which dreams regularly occur – when you’ve spent at least a month writing on your dream journal, see which ones have appeared more than once as it could prove to be important. For example, do you find yourself dreaming more than once about an ex-flame? Why do you think that happened? It may just be nothing, but it could also be significant, as explained here.
  4. Try to see all the elements included in the dream – do you find yourself appearing as different characters in your dreams? Ask yourself why you would appear as such. Look at the mood of your dreams, do they seem dark or bright? All these could represent concepts in your life. Understanding your feelings and what each element could represent in your dream can help you use your dreams to make your life better.
  5. Make sure you are getting quality sleep – understanding your dreams does not start with just making the conscious decision to remembering and writing them down. It actually starts with making sure that you have quality sleep. Make sure you are healthy by exercising, eating the right diet and of course, trying your best to keep yourself stress-free. Try to keep your sleeping patterns regular, sleeping at the right time and having at least 8 hours of sleep.
