Losing weight is one of the most popular new year’s resolutions, but sadly it is also one that many of us have a history of setting on previous years and dropping long before the first flowers of spring come out!
Of course, you can start a weight loss plan at any time, so there is no reason to put too much significance into it being January, but if you want to make sure that you stick to it this time and reach your goals, you’re going to need to keep your motivation at ‘start of diet’ levels throughout!
Here are five ways to keep yourself motivated and enjoy your weight loss journey in 2018.
Make Sure Your Weight Loss Plan is Right for You
There are loads of ways to lose weight, but if you’ve picked one that doesn’t suit your lifestyle or taste in food, then you will need far greater willpower to stick to it and probably won’t really enjoy your diet.
Some busy people like the convenience of diets based around intermittent fasting (where you eat your whole calorie allowance in one small window of time every day), or meal replacements like the ones you’ll find reviewed at weightlossshakes.com. Others find they think about food all day if they try this and are better eating ‘little and often’.
People who like cheese, fatty cuts of meat and eggs do well on low carb diets where these are allowed in large quantities, whereas people with a sweet tooth struggle with these and tend to do better on classic low fat, low-calorie diets.
As long as your plan suits you, you’re already well set.
It can be hard to tell in the mirror whether you have lost weight or it’s just wishful thinking, so take progress pictures in the same outfit to compare so you can really see the difference.
Reward yourself in big ways for meeting a goal, for instance, by going shopping or getting a new haircut, and in small ways for other things you should be proud of – a relaxing bubble bath after a workout, for example. These rewards should never be food-based, however, as you are trying to disassociate unhealthy food from pleasure in your mind.
You can even set a really big reward to give yourself with once you reach your final goal, like a vacation.
Do It With Others
If you have a friend who is also keen to lose weight, you can work to support each other. If not, there are loads of groups online where you can find like-minded people to share your weight loss experience.
Tell people you are on a diet and what your goals are. This makes you accountable, and may also spur you to stay motivated so you won’t have to feel embarrassed for quitting in front of your friends!
Good luck with your New Year weight loss challenge!
