Spend a Friday evening with Timeless Asha

While randomly switching channels sometime this week, I saw an ad/mention about Timeless Asha – a tribute to Asha Bhosle by various young artists of the Hindi Film industry and graced by famous musicians, vocalists, performing artists among others.

This tribute is telecast on Friday, 8th September at 7 PM and I am definitely watching it.

The tribute is to celebrate Asha’s 84th birthday. Yes, she’s 84 years old. She sure doesn’t look it, doesn’t she?

A bit about Asha Bhosle

Born in 1933 in Sangli, Asha was just 10 when her career took off. From Ghazals to Qawwalis, sad songs to cabaret numbers, she could sing anything. My personal favorite is some of her mujra numbers. However success did not come easy to her. For most of her career, she was in the shadow of her more famous sister – Lata Mangeshkar. It is only during her later years that she was able to come out of that and receive acclaim for her style of singing.

About Friday’s event

Aayushmann Khurrana – one of my favorite actors and all-round charismatic and likable personality is hosting the show. And there’s going to be performances by Urmila Matondkar, Radhika Apte, Bhumi Pednekar, and Lauren Gottlieb.

But what’s really getting me excited is the possibility of some excellent music. I am a huge fan of Asha Bhosle and love her even preferring her to her more famous sister – Lata Mangeshkar. There is always a youthfulness, melody, sweetness, and liveliness in Asha’s voice, that I have yet to find in today’s singers.

I am not very sure if Asha Bhosle is singing anything. However, I do expect that some of my old fave Asha Bhosle songs such as Chura liya Hai, Oh Mere Sona Re, and some other crowd favorites would be performed by other singers – maybe Monali Thakur or Antara Mitra. It would be wonderful to listen to some old hits remixed.

Some old time stars such as Helen, Zeenat Aman, Jaya Prada, and Dimple Kapadia are also going to be present and would be sending tributes to this legendary singer who made them super-successful with her wonderful songs.

Here is a quote from Asha Bhosle about the tribute:

I have always celebrated my birthday with my family and close friends. And I am deeply honored that Zee Classic has decided to showcase this special concert to celebrate my birthday. Watching the young singers of today perform on my songs in the presence of all my well-wishers in the industry was indeed a very humbling experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the highlight was the song where all the actresses I sang for came on stage after so many years.

@jennyblaisdell:disqus You’re welcome. She’s a real classic. Been around for years, and has sung some of the all-time classic songs in Hindi movies, so I was pretty excited about it 🙂
