Teaser Tuesdays: Sharp Objects

I’ve been reading Sharp Objects – Gillian Flynn’s début novel, and I am torn at how much I admire her dreamy, descriptive writing style, and how repulsed I am by some of the goings-on in this book.

However, I take pity on you and share a lighter teaser from the book that also illustrates Flynn’s clever way of setting a scene.

The watering hole closest to my mom’s house was an expensive, glassy box that specialized in salads and wine spitzers, Wind Gap’s sole upscale eatery.

It was brunch-time, and I couldn’t stand the thought of Alan and his soupy eggs, so I walked myself over to La Mere. My French only goes to eleventh grade, but judging from the restaurant’s aggressively nautical theme, I think the owners meant to name it La Mer, The Sea, and not La Mere, The Mother.

I have read this book and while I love Gillian Flynn’s thing of writing super prickly heroines, I did not love this as much as I loved Gone Girl. When will she write another book? I want her to!

@readingtheend:disqus I think Camille was such a lame duck heroine. I would have liked her to have a bit more backbone and stand up to her mother. She’s supposed to be 30-ish, but she sounded like such a child, sometimes.

I read this a while back but seeing it just from the opening, I’d pick it up again – she does have a way with words does Gillian Flynn

@cleobannister:disqus Yes, she does. I now want to read Dark Places and The Grown up too!

@laurathomas61:disqus I’ve read Gone Girl and this now. Two more to go. I am looking forward to it!

With that cover, this looks like a dangerous book to leave lying around where it might be stepped on! I quite liked “Gone Girl” but haven’t picked up this one yet. I’m sure I’ll get around to it at some point …

Glad to hear you are enjoying it. This was actually the first book I read from Flynn, and I gotta say, I didn’t like it. At all. It felt like such a chore to get through. It would seem Flynn’s work doesn’t really go down so well with me, and I really thought it would because she writes the genre I love, holds no punches with the icky side of things (this book highlighted that), but this felt like it missed everything for me. The last few pages had the best content, stuff I would have LOVED to delve into more, but instead it was rushed to wrap it all up. I hope you review this, I would love to read your thoughts!

@disqus_VgvrqNgGl4:disqus I loved it until about midway through until the main character does such lame things. I know she had a bad childhood and stuff, but come on, she’s 30. How can you do drugs with pre-teens, and sleep with someone so much younger, vulnerable, and messed up. Eww! She lost all my sympathy there.
