Top Ten Tuesdays: Ten Books on my Summer TBR List

toptentuesday

Today, The Broke and the Bookish bloggers have asked us to list our ten summer reads.

Ignoring the fact that summer is hopefully over in this part of the world and that we seem well into the monsoons, I now list the ten books that I hope to read in the next three months.

  1. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr – I recently read The Book Thief and loved it, and based on that, I cannot wait to read this book which is also about a small child during World War 2.
  2. The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen – I didn’t love the first book in this series, but I was intrigued enough by it to automatically add this sequel to my TBR list when I got news of the sequel’s release.
  3. The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro – Practically everything this author puts out will make it to my TBR list. I haven’t picked up this book yet because of the insanely high prices on the hardcovers (and I want only hardcover, Ishiguro is too loved for me to settle for anything less).
  4. Dangerous Women anthology by George R.R.Martin and co – Now that I am done with the books and the series, I need something to tide me over until next year when hopefully the next book and the next season of the series are out. Till then, I will settle for the one short story – The Princess and the Queen, that gives us some back story on the Targaryens’ rule in Westeros.
  5. Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel – Maybe I will finally get to this Booker-winning novel this year? I don’t know, I could say I am waiting for the series to end, but for some reason (even though I want to read this book), I keep postponing it for something else. Hopefully, I do get to it this year.
  6. The Lives of Others by Neel Mukherjee – Another Booker-nominated novel that I’ve wanted to read. I have heard this is superior to The Lowland, which I liked despite its flaws, so I cannot wait to read what is supposed to be a better take on the Naxalite movement.
  7. The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton – I am rounding off the Booker reading trilogy by including this book, which I’ve wanted to read for ages. I don’t quite think I can read three Booker chunksters all in a row; I”ll probably pick one of these in the end.
  8. The Talented Mr.Ripley by Patricia Highsmith – No summer monsoon reading list can be complete without some chills and thrills. I’ve wanted to read this classic crime novel (and hopefully the series) ever since I saw and loved the movie. I do, so I hope I”ll get to it this year.
  9. L.A Confidential by James Ellroy – Another oldie crime novel that’s been on my TBR list ever since I saw the movie. I blame these fantastic movie adaptations for not getting to these books. I worry that I won’t love the books quite as much. Has anyone read these two books? I’d love to know if they are worth my time.
  10. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – I am rounding off this top ten list with this. It’s a book that I was pretty uninterested in when it first came out, but there have been so many glowing reviews that it makes me think I should pick this up sooner rather than later.

What books are on your reading list this summer/monsoon/winter?

You’ve got some awesome picks! I’m so excited about The Buried Giant! Happy reading! 🙂

  2. Jen @ Under a Gray Sky

I had Wolf Hall on my tbr list for what felt like forever. I finally decided to read it and loved it! Mantel takes a period of history that we’re so familiar with and tells it from a new perspective. Her writing is amazing. I’d say of all the books on your list, this is a Must Read!

@jenunderagraysky:disqus Glad to hear that, Jen. For a long time, I felt this story was been there done that. How many different ways can there be to tell this sequence of events? But so many people have loved this book that I can’t wait to read her take.

@readingtheend:disqus definitely super-ambitious. I”ll be surprised and very happy to get even two knocked out of this list >.< . This post is a good reminder for me though as I don't actually maintain TBR lists.

@lipsypennell:disqus I believe a part of the book is based there, or at least that’s what I gathered from the blurb.

That is a great great list! I can’t wait for the Tearling sequel since I loved the first one 🙂 and George Martin anthologies are absolutely exceptional. The only one that I would not look forward to would be LA confidential. The name itself is so modern for my tastes and I never knew there was a movie too. Will ask Hubbs. He loves stuff like this.

@wantonruminating:disqus Actually, the LA Confidential movie is stunning, I love it. The sets, the costumes, the story, all first-class. I feel the book may not be as good, but still I want to give it a try. The story is not modern at all, more like crime-noir in 50s Hollywood.
