Teaser Tuesdays: Eat Pray Love

Eat,_Pray,_Love_–_Elizabeth_Gilbert,_2007Yeah, yeah. I am just getting around to reading this book.

I am not usually into the finding yourself style of books, and so I never bothered about the hype on this one. But after admiring Elizabeth Gilbert’s writing in The Signature of all Things, I decided I need to give this one a try, and so far in (just finished the eat section in Italy, and feeling very hungry 😉 ), it’s pretty good, if a little repetitive.

I am digging it in spite of the somewhat bombastic language and the overdose of self-awareness and the peppering of inspirational quotes throughout.

However, I did find the below sentence rang very true.

The only thing more unthinkable than leaving was staying; the only thing more impossible than staying was leaving.

It’s very difficult to get out of a difficult situation, I think.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

teasertuesdays31

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

ARE there inspirational quotes sprinkled throughout? I don’t remember there being. I’ve always been fond of this book — it’s gotten a lot of criticisms for being sort of a prescriptive privileged thing, but actually it felt to me like one crazy-but-self-aware woman telling about things she did in her life. That were often crazy. But I still enjoyed hearing about them. Elizabeth Gilbert makes me laugh.

@readingtheend:disqus I love her writing, but I prefer her fiction. Have you read The Signature of all Things? I liked that a lot compared to Eat Pray Love.

I really enjoyed this book when I read it. I don’t normally read nonfiction (like, ever) but found myself really drawn to her situation. I hope you enjoy the Pray and Love parts too!

@kerry_o_donnell:disqus I didn’t enjoy the Pray section much, but Eat and Love were pretty good.

I agree with your take on this book. But maybe that has to do with where I was in my life when I read it! I hope you end up enjoying the book.
My Teaser is from WHERE OR WHEN.

I’m ususally staying far away from this type of book, especially with the huge religous aspect, but I loved this story. It was open-minded and captivating, and if you come to love it like I did, I advise you to never-ever watch the movie!

Yes, the quote you shared is true, in my opinion at least 😉
