BBAW: Unexpected Treasures

A Treasure Chest of Book Blogs
A Treasure Chest of Book Blogs

Today’s meme question deals with trying out a new book or series based on the influence of another blogger.

I am not a huge fan of China-related fiction. Partly, because I read too much Amy Tan. Not too big a fan of her books either. But Meghan’s review of Peony in Love by Lisa See convinced me that I should try it out. Meghan’s review highlighted the historical aspects of the book, and because I do love historical fiction (though predominantly western-oriented), it prompted me to pick up this one.

And it was a real eye-opener. I can’t say I completely loved the book in itself. But, I loved the setting, and all the historical tid-bits. I haven’t read another Lisa See novel again, but it’s definitely on the cards. Thanks to Meghan, I discovered one more great writer a little out of my comfort zone.

That sounds wonderful. Maybe I should pick that book up as well? Because I’d love to read more China related books as well as historical fiction.

@Iris: I think you should go for it. It’s an unusual book that dabbles in a lot of Chinese mythology.

You might like Shanghai Girls, another See title that I just read recently. You can find a brief review at Semicolon.

I enjoyed Peony in Love, and I’ve never managed to make it through a Tan book! lol I’ve read several Chinese authors over past few months as part of the China Challenge, and my favourite is Eileen Chang. So if you’re looking for more recs, I’d say give her a go. 🙂

I’m so glad! I’m not really a fan of Amy Tan either, as it turns out, but Lisa See is really good. I’m thrilled that I led you to a book you enjoyed. =)
