Once Upon a Time There was a Reading Challenge…

After last year’s utter and complete Reading Challenge disaster where I did not manage to complete even one, I decided to really take it easy with the reading challenges.

However, my resolution frequently becomes dented when I come across such beautiful imagery tempting me to commit myself to reading challenge doom.

Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings has made it even more impossible not to accept this challenge by providing an option called “The Journey”. As per Carl…

This is really as simple as the name implies. It means you are participating, but not committing yourself to any specific number of books. All reading is a journey, perhaps none more so than reading fantastical fiction. By signing up for The Journey you are agreeing to at least read one book within one of the four categories during March 21st to June 20th period. Just one book. If you choose to read more, fantastic! If not, then we have still had the pleasure of your company during this three month reading journey and hopefully you have read a great book, met some interesting people, and enjoyed the various activities that occur during the challenge. It has always been of utmost importance to me that the challenges that I host be all about experiencing enjoyable literature and sharing it with others. I want you to participate. Hence, The Journey.

By participating in “The Journey”, I commit myself to reading at least one book from one of the following genres:

  • Fantasy
  • Folklore
  • Fairy tale
  • Mythology

That’s easy peasy, I think :). I now have to decide the book/books that I am going to read on this journey.

Anybody have any suggestions for me? Anybody else wanting in on this challenge? It sounds like so much fun I really wanted to participate more fully, but alas! I know I am going to have my hands full with work, and so don’t want to bite off more than I can chew.

Haha I thought I was the only one who had reading challenge problems. I didn’t finish any of my reading challenges last year. I was so ashamed! The worst was the ONE book reading challenge for Carl’s R.I.P. challenge that I just…. couldn’t finish. All I had to do was read the Graveyard Book and that was it. But, things came up and BAM. another reading challenge not done 😛

Strangely, I don’t really know what your reading tastes are, even though I’ve kind of been keeping track of your reading 🙂
    * Fantasy – Book of a Thousand Days maybe? Or a Megan Whalen Turner book?
    * Folklore – Anything Juliet Marillier, I consider folklore and awesome!
    * Fairy tale – I want to read Confessions of an Ugly stepsister, have you read this one? If so, did you like it?
    * Mythology – Erm, having a hard time thinking one up under this category…

You could also read some folktale collections…I came across a lovely collection of folktales from the British Isles 🙂

  3. Vaishnavi

Try The Little Prince…I am not sure which category it falls under but I am guessing it is one of the four 🙂

@Vaishnavi: Thanks for the interesting recommendations. I couldn’t really think of anything falling into the folk tales/fairy tales category, as I don’t read such books too much

All the best with the challenge 🙂 I can’t think of joining any. I feel forced at that time . But I guess with such a splendid challenge button it’s hard to resist.

Mythology – I think Percy Jackson series would be good. Also Palace Of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Devkaruni

Fairy Tale – I guess you will have no problem with selection here. But I would recommend Beauty by Robin McKinley .

    Hope that helps 🙂
